Prayer: The Novena Prayer

Eternal rest grant unto (name), O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. Father of mercy, You know what this person was to me. Hold what I cannot hold; forgive what only You fully know; complete whatever was left unfinished. Bring them swiftly into Your light, where every tear is wiped away β€” and comfort us who remain, with the certain hope of meeting again. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A nine-day prayer for the faithful departed

A novena for the dead gives families and communities a steady way to entrust a loved one to God's mercy over nine days. Pray the day's text by name, allow space for grief and remember that Catholic prayer for the dead is grounded in hope in Christ's death and resurrection, not in fear or a promise to control the afterlife.

The page distinguishes a private novena from the Church's funeral and memorial rites. It offers a gentle structure, Scripture-aware language and a path to the US Catholic prayers for death and dying when a family needs more immediate pastoral material.

One window of grace per day

  1. Day 1: for the soul's peaceful passage.
  2. Day 2: for forgiveness of their faults.
  3. Day 3: for the good they did β€” thank God for it by name.
  4. Day 4: for their family's grief.
  5. Day 5: for those who loved them long ago.
  6. Day 6: for all who die unnoticed.
  7. Day 7: for the souls in Purgatory nearest release.
  8. Day 8: for your own preparation for a holy death.
  9. Day 9: in thanksgiving β€” the communion of saints has no orphans.

November custom

Many pray this daily through the first nine days of November (All Souls, Nov 2). At the cemetery or from home, the oldest line suffices: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord…
